Jewish Leaders Find Ancient Connections Between Faith and Psychedelics

Some Jewish religious leaders and practitioners are embracing psychedelics and psychedelic-like experiences, including breathwork, as ways to connect with God and their faith. Meir Kay, a rabbi and co-founder of AhDaMa, facilitates “remembrance” gatherings where Jewish men use Holotropic breathwork, a technique believed to release natural DMT in the brain, to achieve spiritual connections.

Rabbi Harry Rozenberg argues that psychedelic experiences are actually embedded in Jewish religious history, pointing to stories in the Torah such as the burning bush and Yom Kippur rituals that may have involved psychoactive plants like the acacia tree, which contains DMT. He interprets these ancient texts as evidence that psychedelic substances played a role in early Jewish religious practices.
