According to The Seattle Times, Tacoma’s City Council unanimously passed a resolution to stop enforcing restrictions on natural psychedelics, including psilocybin mushrooms, while pushing for broader decriminalization across Washington state.
Though the city cannot override state regulations, the January 28 measure aligns Tacoma with Seattle and other municipalities taking similar stances. The policy maintains restrictions on sales, possession in schools and parks and impaired driving.
The Times reports that after Seattle enacted comparable policies in October 2021, enforcement remained minimal. Seattle Police data shows eight psilocybin-related arrests in 2021, all tied to other offenses.
Since 2022, police documented 15 cases involving natural psychedelics as evidence, though these too were connected to separate crimes.
